CISG is a group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC), a science-based network of more than 8,500 volunteer experts from almost every country of the world, working together for “A world that values and conserves biodiversity.” SSC’s role is to provide information to IUCN on biodiversity conservation, the inherent value of species, their role in ecosystem health and functioning, the provision of ecosystem services, and their support to human livelihoods. This information is fed into The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Cave Invertebrate Specialist Group is one of the youngest groups of the IUCN SSC, established in 2014 by Tony Whitten and Louis Deharveng, who were its first Co-Chairs (2014-2017).
